I remember making these really elaborate Angpow lanterns when I was in school. I remember having to cut little cardboard pieces to slot into the Angpows and buying the little tassels. What I don't remember is where the lanterns went after they were completed.
I have to point out that this is not a typical Chinese New Year lantern. It's an incredibly easy thing for a toddler to do (oh, maybe that's why Poppy wasn't too excited about it!). I think it shouldn't even be called a lantern. An Angpow jellyfish is more like it
Oh well, I had alot of fun doing it :)
What you'll need:
1 big toilet roll (you'll need to befriend a toilet auntie for that)
Old Angpow packets of different sizes and lengths
Scissors
Glue
How to make it:
Step 1: Cut long packets into strips, length-wise, and cut small ones into small pieces (squares are the easiest)
Step 2: Paste long strips around circumference, allowing for a 1cm or so border (this becomes the bottom of the lantern)
Step 3: Paste squares onto the toilet roll, covering the entire outer part
Step 4: Use a screwdriver (or any other appropriately dangerous tool you don't want your child to learn about) to make 2 holes opposite each other on top part of the toilet roll, about 1cm from circumference
Step 5: Tie a string through the holes. Tada! Done!
